Refugee (2)

I'm still at Tessa's...and I've a few random thoughts to share with you all...
  1. Don't go out in just a hoodie when the weather has the potential to drop to 1 degrees Celsius.
  2. 10 movies in the span of 4 days may be excessive...but numbingly satisfying.
  3. Blind your eyes to the amount of butter, oil and sugar used in Thanksgiving dishes...and food in general.
  4. I'll never understand American Football. 2 hours of people running and falling and jumping on each other and running and falling and jumping on each other. *shakes head*
  5. Sleeping for 10 hours each night does NOT make you more alert. On the contrary, it tends to make you sleepier.

And oh, did you know that stars out in the country are amazing? Mmmm...I love stars...

Work: Day 1

Right now, I am procrastinating writing my paper. I love papers/speeches which are informative...4 years of teaching sunday school/speaking at CFs has taught me that. But when it comes to argumentative/persuasive stuff...I balk. I'm non-confrontational k? A pacifist. A keeper of peace.
.
Anyways. I'm going to procrastinate that paper and INFORM you about my first day of work.
.
I am a Service Technician, I work for Campus Technology, and I am a girl. You see, Tech and boy go together. Tech and girl don't go together. I'm gender biased. Sue me. But the truth is, you don't see girls lugging amplifiers around very often do you?
.
Before I get ahead of myself...mainly what I do is: I set up sound systems and LCD projectors for events around campus...and do classroom audio/visual maintenance...beyond that, I'm not so sure...=P
.
Yeah, so it's a guy dominated field and I'm tickled to death that I was even considered for this job. Heehee. Anyways...lugging those huge amplifiers around for Kids Band and setting up the sound system for chapel has given me a foretaste of what I'm going to be doing...
.
So on Friday, I reported to work at 1:30 pm. Boss taught me how to do some computer stuff (won't elaborate and bore you to tears). Then we walk walk walked to building #1 where all the audio/visual stuff was stored. He showed me around...and then we walk walk walked back to building #2. After sitting on my butt for a while, we walk walk walked building #3. Then he sends me and my colleague (heee...I get to use that word. I am tickled) to the Storage Room in building #1 to return some thing. Then we walk walk walk back to building #2 and sit on our butts again. After a while, Boss comes and takes me to building #4 to set up a sound system there. So everything is set up...and the mike doesn't work because there is NO BATTERY. I walk walk walk back to building #2 to get a battery. Walk walk walk back to building #4 to put the battery in the mike. And then I get let off work. So I walk walk walk back to my dorm.
.
What did I do on Friday? I walked and sat and walked and sat. =) Right now the weather is nice for walking, I can't say I'll be looking forward to it in the dead of winter when the CRAZY OKLAHOMA WIND blows though. But hey! Good exercise right?
.
Anyways, Boss seems like a nice, relaxed guy...the atmosphere in the office is pretty friendly...and everyone I've met so far are cheery. Overall rating of my first day of work? 8/10.
.
Now...back to that paper.

IDF Retreat

I just came back from a retreat with the IDFers. It is like a Christian Fellowship for international students...and there w a grand total of 3 of us! There were supposed to be 4 people...yeah, we are a cozy bunch...but there was some mix up...and attendance dropped by 25%. =(

Pictures, people!

President, Alice and The Stoner eating dinner in front of the TV.
Dinner.

Daddy and Mummy cooking for THE KID.
Bollywood?
I believe I can flyyyy!!
I really do.

Somewhere along the way, IDF Retreat became an IDF Committee Retreat and we ended up having a brain storming session. THE KID ended up taking minutes again. It's my lot in life, I tell you. But yeah, it was cool.

Anyways, it's got me thinking again, what the purpose of IDF really is. BLEK. I hate thinking, but it's possessing me. ARGHHHHH...No, not really, but I believe in school/college/university ministries...I've seen lives changed, so...*train of thought rambles on...*

Ooooh! I finally got to watch WALL-e. *squeals over happy movies* =D I missed it before because it came out on 14th August in Malaysia - the day I flew here. *Rawr*

I was looking at some old pictures and...

See this picture? Well, it wasn't always like this...You see, this tree:
Should be the size of this tree:So it should look something like this:
Please excuse my horrible photoshopping skills.

You see, somewhere along the way, this tree:
Died.
May your secondary xylem rest in peace. I'm so scientific.

Back to my story. You see, some years back, this cow:was the cause of that tree's untimely death. This cow rode her bike into that tree and that tree dieded dead. And a new (and smaller) tree was planted in its stead.

Speaking about cows...I ran across this the other day:
Brings back memories of BK days with Ms. Moey and pearl milk tea. (Um...yeah, we drew cows in BK class. Oops. )

"The magic number is 5" and other short stories.

I visited the Social Security Office 5 times before getting my application done.
.
On Wednesday I got my SS Card in the mail...and had to do some paperwork with the admin office. Due to certain 'complications' I ended up visiting the admin office 5 times. FIVE TIMES!
.
Anyways, I'm authorized to work now...so that's good news...sort of..*kicks my lazy butt in the butt*
.
.
.
International Showcase was today...where international students partnered the cafeteria to produce international food for the student body. Malaysia was in charge of dessert...and the Malay ladies made kuih ketayap and some green bean porridge/soup. So since I don't, can't and will not cook, I served. And man it was tiring. *kau-tows to all waiters of the world*
.
Yeah, so now I have a huge backache...but on the plus side, I've India's nasi beriyani in my tums. *pats stomach, smiles and belches* Only thing...it wasn't spicy at all (Imagine the ang-mors running to the water dispenser). And the yogurt with chives was made with vanilla yogurt. o.O *taste buds goes wonky*
.
I'll post up pictures when I get them.
.
.
.
Oh, I had a "more than answered" prayer today.
.
I was walking to class, after a SUPER TIRING 4 hours at the international showcase...the wind was blowing SO HARD in my face I could barely move forward...and it was taking the oxygen past me so fast I could HARDLY GULP DOWN ENOUGH AIR...and I had to run to the admin office before 5 pm...and CLEAN THE BATHROOM...so I whispered, "Dear God, please let me out of class early today."
.
And behold, I looked up, and my classmates walked out of the building. Class was cancelled. *beams*
.
Someone up there knows when you need a breather. And sometimes, He gives more than you ask for.

RE: Caryn vs Rat

This is in response to Naomi on my chatterbox.

Don't argue. The Piano Teacher is ALWAYS right. *runs*

Doe lei meee!!!

I stole roomie's guitar today...and it felt good to know that...

...I am still able to tune a horrendously out of tune guitar...(I didn't have to restring it...oops, inside joke)

...and that I can still play tabs I haven't really touched since the end of Form 5...

Hubby (guitar version), don't be jealous.

One of my many hubbies...>.<

What if...

What if...
...your momma abandoned you...
...to pursue her own life...?
...her own dreams...?

What if...
...you haven't seen her for 3 months...
...and perhaps never will?
...ever?

Would you still eat the organic oats that grandmomma feeds you?

And sleep in the toilet paper roll godma made for you?

And stuff your bedding in your food tray?

And make The Piano Teacher scream?

The World's Greatest Rat Trainer/momma has been gone for 3 months...
And she wants a warm fuzzy animal to squeeze.

Coincidence? I think not...

The salad I stuck in roommate's fridge is now a block of ice.
It's almost freezing out there, and there is enough wind to blow me back to Malaysia.

Coincidence? I think not...=P

Ah well, life's like that sometimes..

This has the potential to be a long and boring post. Be warned.
.
K, lets pick up where I last ended (with regards to getting hired)...
.
Before I start work I need a thing called a social security number...so I can get taxed. Yay! Not. Anyways...so I started the big process of applying for the SSN on monday.
.
I woke up EARLY to go visit the human resource department to get some paper work done. The lady gives me a package and tells me to go to Shephard's Mall about 1 mile away where the Social Security Office is. So after classes are done for the day, I get Good Samaritan #1 to drive me there. And...Tutup! Office hours are 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. It's 4.07 pm. I'm 7 minutes late. Ah well, life's like that sometimes. I'll try again tomorrow.
.
The next day, class ends early and the weather is so nice I decide to walk there myself. Tutup. It's Veteran's Day. Ah well...
.
Today I woke up EARLY so that I could reach there EARLY and get it over with. So I walk walk walked. And oh me cowness! The whole office was full!! It was 9.25 am when I took my number -N4- and I waited till 10.45 am before I got called to the window. Half way through..."Sorry ma'am, you are missing a signature from XXX". Ah well...
.
So I walk walk walked back to campus. By the time I got back, it's 11:15 am. Chemistry class has started. So I missed my first class for the semester. What an experience. I get XXX's signature and decide to try my luck and go back to the SSO. I dunno what posessed me. Like seriously.
.
So I walk walk walk back to the SSO. Take a number - N132 - and sit down for 5 minutes before I figure out that there is no way I'm going to make it for my next class on time. So I leave. Ah well...
.
So I go for class. And stone through it. Then after class, I get Good Samaritan #2 to drive me over there AGAIN. I take a number -N196- and wait. wait. wait. I tell G.S. #2 to go home. After all, I'm going to be there forEVER. She goes home. And here's when things start looking up. They call my old -N132- number. Granted, they took half an hour before calling me, but at least my 4th trip wasn't for nothing right?
.
Anyways, they processed my paperwork. And nothing interesting happened. So I walk walk walked back again. I was late for psych class (another first) but at least I got there.
.
On the bright side,
  1. I did eventually manage to get my SSN application done.
  2. I walked a total of 7 miles, burning about 500 calories. I should go get a fat juicy burger to eat.
  3. Dear Father God in Heaven probably won't be testing my patience for a long long time to come. >.<
  4. I can now say that I've skipped a class. I'm human.

Ah well, life's like that sometimes...

Reminds me of the times I ran around WMS chasing for Mrs. P's, Ms Phoon and Mdm Goh's signature...and waiting in the office for the principals (they are busy busy weemen) to put their stamp of approval over my letters...

Ah well, life's like that sometimes...

Bathroom grouses...

Roommate turned off the lights while I was showering...for the 4th time!! (Btw, I'm refering to the number of times roommate turned off the lights, not the number of times I showered.)

The first time roommate flipped the switch off, she left it off for 10 minutes and I showered in semi darkness...thank goodness she left the door ajar...

Second time around, it lasted for 5 minutes before she let out a gasp and ran to my rescue.

The third time it happened, the lights went out and the door closed. Pitch black. Hurray, I hope I don't slip, fall and DIEEEEeeeee. 10 seconds later..."GASP! Roommate! I'm so sorry!!!"

Today it happened again. She took 2 seconds before she realised that she did it again. And I realised that it was high time I blogged about my roommate who is going to save the world by saving its environment by conserving electricity. Or maybe it's just a subtle hint that I'm taking too long in the shower. Who knows?? =P

Hahaha...i'm not complaining...it's just an automatic reflex for her (and a good one too!!)...i guess it's one of the things we get from sharing a bathroom with 4 other human critters...Roommate, if you ever read this, we're cool. Thank you for bearing with my hair. Besides, you are improving...from 10 minutes to 5 minutes to 10 seconds to 2 seconds...definitely a commendable effort!

Fyi, the bathroom has separate stalls for the shower and the throne room...I don't shower with the doors unlocked.

luvy duvy...

For public speaking, I'm doing a speech on Gary Chapman's "5 Love Languages". This time, we need some sort of visual aid...so this evening, I've been cranking up my dormant creative juices to produce this:
Pretty? Hahaha...

So...according to Gary Chapman, there are 5 languages of love...and each of us have a primary love language which we are most "fluent" in. I'm presenting them descending order of my "fluency" - is there such a word?
My primary love language: Quality Time. I'm likely to redo this because it's unsymetrical. *Shudders*

My secondary love language: Words of affirmation. One word - plain. I need to tambah lagi.

Next: Acts of Service. Mother Teresa = Service. I plan to tell Ms Moey's Mother Teresa/Teresa/Free sari story. =D

#4: Gifts. Hmm...this looks weird.

The love language I failed in: Physical Touch. I'm sorwee, but I'm a big "touch me not"...hahaha...at least I'm improving...>.<
In conclusion, I NEED MY COMPASS/ SHAPE PUNCHERS/ PRINTER/ basically my whole stash of craft goodies that i left behind WHEN I DO ARTSY STUFF!!! Ohh...not to mention, the 1 meter x 2 meter workspace I have in between my bed and dressing table is hardly enough room to work with. Gone were the days when I got to spread my stash of paper/ stationary/ trash/ random thingies over the whole living room floor...*sigh*

Ready...aim...

HIRED!!

It was so sudden, I'm still bemused.

Tuesday: My friend calls up to tell me about this open position.

Wednesday: I send in my resume.

Thursday: I wait.

Friday: I get an email from my prospective boss.

Friday: I go for the interview.

Friday: I am hired.

Don't ask me what I'm doing. It has something to do with computers/ projectors/ sound systems/ bighugescarymachineswithlotsofwiresstickingoutofit...but beyond that, I'm clueless...=P makes me wonder how I landed this job. Or this job landed me. More updates when I figure out exactly what the job requires me to do...

Thank God for people who find jobs for me...and give all sorts of embarrassingly nice recommendations...and basically (I think) make the interview part a mere formality. I like this one, "She takes weight training. She'll be able to carry heavy stuff." lmao...

So my holiday is almost over. Time to stop robbing dad's bank account and be productive.

Nap time!

Whenever Mrs. Anna Tan aka "The Magic Script Machine" is caught napping, you know that she's having a writer's block. But when she wakes up, the writer's block is 'magicked' away and all is well.

Anna Tan Jr. here is following in her mother's footsteps by using this noteworthy method to cure brain freezes. Right now, she is most happy because of the divine inspiration she just received from the Nap Angel. Microsoft Word - HERE I COME!

Spring 09

I'm more than halfway through the Fall 08 semester...Oooo...haha...

Anyways, today enrollment for the spring semester began, and this kiasu m'sian got up at 8 am to make sure she got into the classes she wanted with the professors she wanted at the times she wanted. Kiasu betul...I got everything I wanted, but next enrollment, I'm getting up at 9 am. =P
.
So this is my timetable. I doubt you will be able to see anything, but I slaved over it so I'm posting it up anyways.
.

Composition 2 is classified as a compulsory general education course and it basically teaches me how to write college papers.

Introduction to Biblical Literature is another compulsory general education course. I got a supposedly good lecturer so that should be interesting.

Human Anatomy and Physiology is a class that will fufill the requirements for both the Nursing major and the Biomedical Science major. I'm delaying that decision for as long as possible. >.<

Introduction to World Religions. It's one of the classes that I could pick from the Values and Cultures General Education catergory. I figured that since I come from Malaysia, where like most of the main world religions are practiced, this would be a insightful course to take. Besides, I didn't get to graduate from d'NA and finish off the World Religions section. Grr.

Science, Technology & Society. ARRRRGH!! Last year, during SPM. I thought I had kissed EST goodbye forever!!!! *vents vents vents* Kidding. I doubt that this will be anything like my SPM EST class. But it still causes a gag reaction. Anyways, it's another Gen Ed class, so no escaping it. I'm taking the Biology section (there are Chemistry and Physics sections too) and I think I will be studying how Biology relates to the technology and society. Duh.

Yeah. So if you were wondering, General Education is part of the American College liberal art education, where you don't just learn your major, but to, I quote, "Expand your horizons". >.<>

Okay, I blabbed long enough already. Peace out.

America Votes

8 years ago, the family followed dad to US. I was what? 10 years old? *gasps*...

Anyways, it was about the time of the 2000 elections...I was in grade 5, and we had this mock voting thing...and every kid had to go into this cubicle and click on the candidate we wanted to vote for.

So I go in, and I stare at the elephant (republican party) and donkey (democratic party) and like 3 other icons (random parties). And I'm like...Whaaat? There's an election going on? Yeah, so I choose the prettiest picture because it's the prettiest picture, and not some weird animal...and I walk out. Later, the results come out. It goes something like this:

Democrats: 39%
Republican: 60%
Others: 1%

I guess I was that 1%.

8 years later and I'm still blur. Cow was not created for politics.

WHOA! Weekend...

Friday

The weekend starts with...THE END OF ENGLISH COMPOSITION 1 CLASS!!!
And this week, class ended early because half the class didn't come...by the way, we had a paper due...that explains the missing people...

Then...Bday boy took Alice and I out for dinner...And we ate. Oh the gluttony...

Appetizer
What was left of Alice's and my dinner.
Saturday

8 am - Go gym to run off the nachos with extra chicken, grilled chicken and shrimp...

9 am - Wash hair

10 am - Wash Clothes

11 am - Dry Clothes

12 pm - Fold Clothes

1 pm - Edward (my father's friend friend who is now my friend who saved me from being left alone in OKC Airport when I first arrived) picks me up for lunch with another m'sian kid (from another campus) and his roommate. We go for dim sum.

Okay, there's a story here. When Edward first brought me to OCU, he took me to this dim sum place. And it was bad. The dim sum was cold...and the skin was thick...and it just didn't taste like dim sum. Today, I was in dim sum heaven. America has taught me one thing: Do not discriminate against dim sum. All dim sum are created equal.

2 ish pm - Oklahoma Bombing Memorial

Some time back, there was a terrorist attack on the Oklahoma Federal Building. Each of these chairs represent a life lost. The little chairs are for the little ones who died. *sigh*

3ish pm - Penn Square Mall to walk walk walk...

4ish pm - Walmart to walk walk walk...Oh, I got me another umbrella-ella-ella-ella to replace my old, dead, inverted umbrella-ella-ella-ella. This one, apparently, is wind proof.

5ish pm - Alice picks me up to go to Bday boy's bday party. Bday boy cooks steamboat. Cow eats steamboat.

Food glorious food!

*pouts*

Lobster face (me), Bday boy, Mindy, Mei Yee, Benjamin

And coolness of coolnesses, I meet Mei Yee ...Who is Elisha's friend who is Tabby's friend. Cool right? And she's from University of the Ozarks...I nearly went there...o.O
.
9ish pm - Go home. I'm so sleepy la...Oooh. Tommorow is daylight savings! I get one extra hour to sleep!
